Built during the early years of the 19th century as a memorial to George Washington by his step-grandson and home to General Robert E. Lee for three decades, Arlington House, The Robert E. Lee Memorial now serves as a tribute to this Civil War leader. Inside the building, artifacts and exhibits speak to the life and achievements of Robert E. Lee as well as his key role during the Civil War. The residence is located just over the river from Washington, DC inside Arlington National Cemetery, which is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
